Hedge Fund

Have you ever had a hunch about something, but you weren’t 100% sure it was true? The hunch isn’t an ordinary hunch; if true, the hunch proves a very different reality. Suddenly, the hunch is no longer a hunch. What you thought you knew, but weren’t sure you knew is made plain and well, now you know.

Today, a question I’ve had for far too long was answered. I’ve had a hunch about the scenario for some time, but because of the nature of the hunch I utterly refused to believe it. Now, there’s little to no doubt. It simply is what it is, and what it is does not match who I am. Suddenly, I understand, accept and appreciate what happened, or didn’t happen rather.

Most church goers are familiar with Job. He had faith, family & finances. He was considered a “good man” by God and his peers. As faithful as He was, God offered him, literally suggested him by name, to be tested by Satan. It seems wrong. It makes no sense. Why would God allow Satan to test Job if He loved him so much? Why would God suggest Job by name? Why not someone else? Sooooo many questions, but this is certain: it had to be that way. See, Job was good. He had Faith. He was in RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. His relationship with God provided a “hedge of protection” all around Him. The first chapter of Job tells us that when God suggested that Satan “try” his servant Job, Satan responded by acknowledging that God was with Job.

““Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.”

‭‭Job‬ ‭1:9-10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Satan knew before ever going for Job that Job had the power of God wrapped around him like a hedge. He knew that God’s hedge wasn’t just for material things, but that it was what kept Job and his family. God ultimately tells Satan to have His way with Job but he could not harm his person. (v.11) This means God had declared Open Season on everything Job had. His children died. His wife was unsupportive. His crops dried up. His wealth vanished. His position in the town diminished. His body had sores and ailments. Satan threw every dart he had at Job, and Job stood.

There are lots of chapters that detail prayers Job spoke to God along with conversations between him and his “friends”. I won’t get into that. My point is simple: All is well when we are backed by God’s Hedge Fund!

By definition, a hedge fund is an investment fund that pools capital from accredited individuals or institutional investors and invests in a variety of assets, often with complex portfolio-construction and risk-management techniques.

1. Investment Fund – Resources designated to being invested. That’s their only purpose.

2. Accredited Individuals – Not just anybody. These folk are trusted and come with a great track record.

3. Variety of Assets – Multiple opportunities of various types; Not limited to only one genre.

4. Complex Portfolio-Construction & Risk Mgmt Techniques – Simply put, it ain’t easy! There’s risk attached. There’s work involved – lots of it!

How does this apply to me or you or Bro. Job? Well, God is the ultimate investor. From breath to blood to food and water, He gives and gives to us. Like a hedge fund investor, he has considered the risk of our free will and human nature and he still chose to take chance after chance on us! God didn’t allow Satan to test Job because Job was good. God allowed the testing because He knew that nobody could create a return on God’s investment like God!

In the middle of his anguish, Job declares:

“Though he slay me, yet I will hope in Him.” Job 13:15

When you know that your investor, His capital and His resources are unbeatable and specifically assigned to you, you don’t mind a little warfare. Job was in the most despair of his entire life, yet His value wasn’t wrapped up in who loved him or what kind of bed he slept on. He needed to know that God was God and His God every moment of every day. Knowing that allowed for strength.

Because God is our refuge, we do not have to own fear. We may see it; we may even feel it, but we don’t have to own it. Death wasn’t the end for Lazarus or Tabitha. Loss didn’t run Job away from God. A speech impediment didn’t keep Moses mute. Our Hedge Fund is solid. There is no failure in this market. Even our losses are building blocks. I’m encouraged because today I found out that what broke me happened to me because there’s a hedge of protection assigned to me. There are angels that won’t allow certain things to happen when I’m walking/driving. There is provision at every turn of this walk with Christ so no matter what’s taken, forfeited, stolen, compromised or contaminated, ALL IS WELL.

God is so good! I’m grateful.

I am Eryka
